SAN FRANCISCO - BART was awarded $25 million from Cycle 7 Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP) for the North Berkeley Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Mobility Enhancements Project.

BART Board Director Rebecca Saltzman said the funding “makes possible two plazas plus bike and pedestrian improvements, which will help transform the North Berkeley BART station area into a mixed-use, sustainable community. . . By enhancing access to public transit and improving bike and pedestrian infrastructure, projects like this will reduce dependency on personal vehicles.”

According to BART, the project includes a TOD garage, an intermodal transit plaza, and improvements made to walking and biking accessibility around the station. The TOD will improve the parking lot and change it into housing and open space. Funds from the TIRCP will go toward the walking and biking infrastructure and will be used to make modifications to multimodal connections. According to the release, the total cost of the project is estimated to be $37 million. By BART’s estimates, there will be 739 new homes in the TOD and would generate roughly 750 new trips daily by 2031.
