NEW YORK - The MTA announced a full reconstruction of LIRR Babylon Station platforms.
Both 12-car platforms were reconstructed at Babylon Station in anticipation of peak ridership this summer, marking a milestone in the station’s renovation. By December 2026, the station will also see improved accessibility with two more elevators, modern amenities, and upgraded infrastructure, MTA reports. The $127 million cost includes repairs that will make the station “safer, more reliable, and more accessible.”
As of reporting, the work completed to date includes the full replacement of two 12-car platforms, installation of 1,100 linear feet of new platform canopy, and two new ADA-compliant elevators that were put into service in September 2025. Additionally, crews have installed new platform lighting, replaced eight stairwells, and made upgrades to the station plaza including paver installation and utility work.
The work that still needs to be completed by the end of the year includes rehabilitating two elevators, replacing two escalators, completing the platform waiting rooms and canopy finishes, and making other ADA upgrades to the bathrooms and doors. Additionally, crews will replace the railing on the viaduct, commission a new automated snow and ice melting system for the winter months, upgrade kiosks and signage, perform concrete work at the station plaza, and reconfigure the parking lot in accordance with ADA standards. Crews will also install new communication and security systems.
Located on the Babylon Branch, the Babylon Station is the terminal station and acts as a connection point for Montauk and eastern Long Island. The renovations at this station, along with Forest Hills and Hollis Stations, are part of the improvements detailed in LIRR ADA Package 2. MTA says the phases of this project were structured so that it avoided construction during peak ridership over the summer.
LIRR Babylon Station Improvements

“Babylon customers will be glad to know the finish line is in sight for our major station renovation,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “The project’s proceeding on time and on budget, and now that all platforms have been reopened, with virtually zero impact to riders.”
“This is yet another project that demonstrates our commitment to Long Island as we continue to invest in our infrastructure to improve the customer experience,” said Long Island Rail Road President Rob Free. “Construction was carefully phased so both platforms could reopen in time for the busy summer season, allowing all customers to benefit from the upgrades made so far with additional improvements still to come.”
“We’re transforming Babylon Station into a modern, reliable and accessible hub for Long Island riders,” said MTA Construction & Development President Jamie Torres-Springer. “This project shows our commitment to smart, efficient construction that gives riders the improvements they deserve—all while maintaining the service they rely on.”
