SEATTLE - Amtrak advances major construction activities at King Street Yard in Seattle.
According to Amtrak, crews have begun building the foundation for a 100,000 square foot maintenance facility. This building will allow Amtrak to support introducing new trains in the area.
Amtrak President Roger Harris said, “The Pacific Northwest is a key priority for Amtrak, with the popular Amtrak Cascades line between Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, B.C. and points in between, as well as our Long Distance Coast Starlight and Empire Builder trains connecting the region. . . This critical investment will help us meet growing customer demand for a new era of rail with brand new trains that will upgrade safety, reliability, and comfort.”
The King Street Yard will support new Amtrak Air trains that will enter into the Amtrak Cascades service in 2026, “along with maintenance for trains on the Long Distance routes that operate out of this yard.” The project is expected to be finished in 2027. Once completed, it will have a new two-bay Maintenance and Inspection facility as well as a service and cleaning bay.
Previously, Amtrak and a contractor began early pre-construction activities. This included relocating buildings and train car equipment in order to begin grading the property. By the end of this year, Amtrak expects it will finish pile driving and mass excavation at the site, allowing for crews to begin work on the pre-engineered metal building for early next year.
President Harris also made a stop in Seattle to observe the progress and lead a media tour. Below are a gallery of images of the visit, courtesy of Amtrak.
