CHICAGO - The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) announced it has completed planned work in 2024 as part of its Refresh & Renew program.
The program is ongoing and cyclical and focuses on station improvement. In 2024, the CTA says it has completed around $6.5 million in repairs and maintenance at 29 stations and 14 bus turnarounds. The program was created in 2019 and is a way for the CTA to keep its stations in a state-of-good-repair along with enhanced safety, security, and overall look.
Before crews work on a station, they inspect and identify any possible areas that need immediate fixing or replacing. Some such repairs and improvements made at stations this year include repairing concrete, removing outdated equipment, fixing utility and plumbing lines, painting, replacing sheet metal and signage, upgrading lighting, and general cleaning. Crews also resurfaced columns, walls, railings, fencing/gates, and platform fixtures.
CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. said, “Every station in the system receives routine cleaning – including power washing – but the Refresh & Renew program allows us to make station improvements that go beyond our daily cleaning and basic maintenance efforts. . . Refresh & Renew is a more comprehensive program where all aspects of cleaning, maintenance and repairs are conducted both on the customer-facing and employee-facing sides of the facility.”
