ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Transportation is studying high-speed rail options between Atlanta and Savannah.

According to a news report, the GDOT is exploring several options for high-speed rail. While planning continues through 2027, a possible service opening date could happen by 2035 with stations in Augusta, Athens, and Macon. The GDOT will host public meetings to gather input, and “the feasibility study is expected to continue through 2027, after which an environmental review would begin.”

In January 2025, the GDOT announced an Atlanta – Savannah Passenger Rail Study with the objectives of gaining project understanding, defining stakeholder roles, and soliciting feedback. Preliminary needs include growth in population and employment, providing a safe mode of travel, improving travel time reliability, connecting intercity services across Georgia, supporting economic growth and supply chain resiliency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Goals for the project and what’s next can be read in more detail in the Study below.
