BALTIMORE - The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) announced that its Metro Subway stations will be closed from October 4th to October 7th at 4:00 a.m. to allow for testing of a new Communications Based Train Control system (CBTC).
According to the release, the Maryland Department of Transportation MTA says the CBTC system is a piece of infrastructure that will “support the new Metro Subway railcars that will begin service in mid-2025.” The CBTC is part of a larger $400 million investment by the agency and will provide better system performance and reliability and improved real-time tracking. The release also states that ongoing testing will be required to be sure the new system is fully integrated with the legacy system. In November and December 2024 as well as February, March, and April 2025, there will be additional testing and subsequent system closures to allow for said testing.
Maryland Transit Administrator Holly Arnold said, “We’re excited to welcome our new Metro trains to Baltimore and a modern Communications Based Train Control System will ensure a successful transition. . . We are working hard to minimize disruptions, and we are grateful to our passengers for their patience during the testing period.”
