BOSTON - MBTA and local leaders celebrated the opening of the renovated Winchester Center Station on the Lowell Commuter Rail Line.

Previously, the station had not been majorly repaired since the 1950s and therefore was inaccessible to the public. In 2021, the MBTA closed the station to allow crews to make repairs and bring the station up to a state-of-good-repair. In 2022, crews began construction, and in 2024, the station was partially open. At that time, the south end of the station was accessible with trains inbound and outbound.

Now, the station is fully open after enhancements were made to the station. Two ramps and three elevators were reconstructed for better accessibility, and a raised platform was constructed to accommodate longer trains. Additionally, crews upgraded the canopies, railings, signs, and lighting as well as installed a modernized public information system to display information both visually and audibly. A bike storage room and benches were added for passengers’ convenience, and walkways and sidewalks were updated. The station also has a new generator back-up and a full emergency lighting back-up.

“I want to thank the entire MBTA workforce, our contractors, and our state and local elected officials for their commitment to delivering a station that is modern, safe, state of the art, and fully accessible to all riders,” said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. “This is another important step forward in building a more inclusive transit system—one station at a time.”

“The Commuter Rail is a great resource for every community we serve,” said General Manager and CEO of Keolis Commuter Services Abdellah Chajai. “The T has done tremendous work at Winchester Center to ensure that all of our riders can access the Commuter Rail and take full advantage of the service.”
