CHICAGO - Metra's 147th Street/Sibley Station will reopen on October 28th after a two-year passenger station project.
According to the release from Metra, the station in Harvey has been completely rebuilt and upgraded and features an ADA-accessible elevator. Additional improvements include extending street-level parking, a covered staircase, a kiss & ride lane, bicycle parking, and pathways for pedestrians. The station also has warming shelters to protect passengers from cold weather.
After close to three decades, the $20.8 million project overseen by IHC Construction Companies LLC was the first significant upgrade to the station. The project’s funding came through the state’s Rebuild Illinois program, the FTA, and a Cook County Invest in Cook grant.
Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski said, “Access to public transportation is an essential building block to a healthy community, and this clean, modern facility that is accessible to everyone is a welcoming gateway to the city of Harvey. . . Metra’s investment at 147th Street and our ongoing program to improve stations along the Metra Electric Line and across our system make our service more attractive and easier to use.”
After the grand opening, Metra will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the station on Tuesday, October 29th at 10 a.m.
