NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - New Rochelle city officials have unveiled a $100 million proposal to redesign the New Rochelle Transit Center.
According to the News12 report, the redesign would not only focus on redesigning and modernizing the transit center, but it would also include adding green spaces, a multi-use plaza, and solar panels. Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert hopes the estimated $100 million cost will be covered through grants. She stressed the growth of the downtown area and said, “New Rochelle is the busiest train station, outside of Grand Central, on the New Haven Line. . . So, seeing it’s importance in the region, we want to revitalize it to make it more of a place that you can come and meet for coffee, or potentially music, and speakeasy in the evening.”
New Rochelle would be the first city in Westchester County with direct Metro-North rail access to Grand Central and Penn stations by 2027, according to the report. However, the mayor has said the timeline for the redesign could take a number of years. As of reporting, no concrete timeline has been stated.
