WASHINGTON, D.C. - Construction on WMATA's Green Line ended December 30, and its Yellow Line now extends to Greenbelt.
According to the release from WMATA, construction that took place last month between Georgia Av-Petworth and U Street on the Green Line finished. Over the course of 13 days, crews worked to make upgrades. Additionally, WMATA says passengers on its Yellow Line can begin traveling to Greenbelt as of December 31. This is the first time the line has extended to Greenbelt since 2023, and the service extension offers service to stations located north of Mt. Vernon Square every four minutes during peak periods.

The work was completed without necessitating extended station closures. Some of the work includes replacing more than 3,100 feet of running rail and renewing 1,300 fasteners. Crews worked to restore lighting and repair leaks as well as renew communications and signal equipment. Workers removed graffiti and cleaned 4,700 linear feet of track bed. Elsewhere, crews replaced 2,646 studs, 171 insulators, and 205 square feet of concrete.
“Extending Yellow Line service to Greenbelt is about making travel simpler and more convenient for our customers,” said Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke. “This change creates more one-seat rides across the region, better connecting Maryland, D.C., and Virginia and giving riders more flexibility in how they move throughout the system. We’re grateful for our customers’ patience as we completed this work and are excited to deliver these improvements.”
