Yaphank-BNL LIRR Station Now Open

NEW YORK CITY - The new Yaphank-BNL Long Island Rail Road station is now open.

According to the MTA, the station was relocated from its original state and now provides better access to the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the William Floyd Parkway, and the Long Island Expressway. Service to the station began July 18.

The station is now fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act with ramp access to the platform, says the MTA. Additional improvements made include a 50-car parking lot and a plaza area with information on train schedules. With the station open, the MTA launches a study of potential infrastructure improvements on the LIRR Main Line east of Ronkonkoma Station, according to the report. Funded by MTA’s 2025-2029 Capital Plan, the study is expected to be complete early next year. The findings from this study will inform infrastructure investment priorities for the LIRR.

This particular segment of the branch has one track and is not electrified. Trains are required to use diesel power on this portion. The study will look at upgrading signals, communication, and infrastructure as well as adding another track to this part of the branch and electrifying part of the branch east of Ronkonkoma. The addition of a second track would “build on LIRR’s Double Track Project between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma,” says MTA.
