With work continuing on Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown LRT, Mayor John Tory is pushing for more transit projects.

During a news conference on Dec. 3, Tory said he wanted the Toronto City Council to move ahead with the Eglinton East Light Rail and Waterfront Transit Network projects.

Tory said the Eglinton East project would help connect Scarborough with the rest of Toronto. The mayor said the completion of Eglinton East would put rapid transit within walking distance of more than 49,000 people. The extension of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT would pull the line past Kennedy Station and into Malvern. The Toronto City Council approved the preferred design for the 15-km project last April.

The Waterfront Transit Network would provide transit access for the city’s eastern lakefront. The Waterfront Transit Network would replace the current underground Union Station streetcar loop with facilities capable of handling larger passenger loads. It is accessible from both the east and west. The project also includes a light rail line along the eastern Portlands to Leslie Street in Toronto.
