SPRINGFIELD, Il. – The ICC approves two public safety projects for highway-rail crossings in both Stephenson and Randolph Counties.

The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved safety projects in Stephenson County and Randolph County. The Stephenson County project is estimated to cost around $685,952 with the Grade Crossing Protection Fund paying 95% of the costs. The remaining costs and future maintenance will be covered by Chicago, Central & Pacific Railroad.

For the Randolph County safety project, 95% of the $949,188 will be paid for by the GCPF with Illinois Central paying the remaining installation and future maintenance costs.

The Stephenson County safety plan requires Chicago, Central & Pacific Railroad to install new automatic warning devices near Riddot, IL at South Farwell Bridge Road and Holland Church Road.

Randolph County will see similar safety upgrades in the form of new automatic warning devices at the crossings near Coulterville at Boyd Road and Campbell Road near Tilden.

The ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan said of the projects that “new automatic warning signals are essential to keeping pedestrians, motorists, and passengers safe near railroad tracks.”

Work in both counties should be completed within 18 months of the order.
