PUCO Approves $3M in Rail Crossing Upgrades in Pickaway County
Written by Jennifer McLawhorn, Managing EditorCOLUMBUS, Ohio – PUCO approved almost $3 million in grade crossing upgrades in Circleville, Ohio. Norfolk Southern will complete said upgrades.
Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) approved close to $3 million in rail crossing upgrades in Circleville (in Pickaway County). According to PUCO, Norfolk Southern will complete a list of improvements:
- Upgrade active warning devices at the Clinton Street grade crossing
- Upgrade active warning devices at the South Washington Street grade crossing and remove Huston Street gates
- Upgrade active warning devices at South Pickaway Street grade crossing and remove Huston Street cantilever/gates
- Complete upgrades to flashing lights and circuitry at South Court Street grade crossing
- Upgrade a new gate at South Scioto Street grade crossing
- Upgrade flashing lights at West Mound Street grade crossing
- Upgrade active warning devices and circuitry with traffic preemption and blank out signs at U.S. 22/Main Street grade crossing
- Upgrade a gate and flashing lights at the West High Street grade crossing
PUCO reports all upgrades will be completed by Norfolk Southern by April 3, 2025. Of the total cost of $2,855,610, Norfolk Southern will pay $713,902 with federal funds covering the remaining $2,141,707.
In addition, funding for safety improvements during construction (which include rumble strips, illumination, and enhanced signage) will come from the State Grade Crossing Safety Fund and will not exceed $5,000 per project.
