The erection of girders above the Dupont Street overpass between Lansdowne Avenue and Campbell Avenue will require full road and sidewalk closures.

The girders are made of large precast concrete and are essentially bridge segments that will support the track.

The upcoming construction is a part of the Davenport Diamond Guideway project that will help bring more GO train service to the Barrie line.

In order to put the girders in place, crews need to set up a gantry system on the overpass. The gantry system will provide the extra muscle needed to lift the heavy concrete girders and will install them precisely where they belong, piece by piece.

Dupont Street, between Lansdowne Avenue and Campbell Avenue, will be fully closed intermittently between Monday, April 4 and Sunday, April 17 from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. This means full closures may not be required for the full duration. However, it will be important for commuters to plan ahead and build in extra time for travel as there could be delays and congestion.

Here are the details:

  • There will be no access for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrian during the closures. Both the roadway and the sidewalks will be closed, through-traffic will not be permitted.
  • Detours during the closure include Lansdowne and Symington avenues going north/south, and across Davenport Road going east/west.
  • Work will include general construction noise at Dupont Street and within the rail corridor south to Paton Road:
    • Rail cars will be travelling up and down the corridor to transport girders from Paton Road (where the girders are stored), to Dupont Street where the gantry crane will install them.
    • A conventional crane will be set up on Dupont Street at times and a gantry crane will be set up above Dupont Street, noise will be limited to equipment engines.
    • General construction equipment such as trucks and a telehandler will be onsite during the activities, all equipped with “white noise” back-up alarms to reduce noise disruptions as much as possible.
  • Light towers will be setup in the rail corridor over Dupont Street to allow work to safely occur overnight.
