LOS ANGELES – The Fairway Drive Grade Separation finishes construction of a roadway underpass in Rowland Heights after eight years.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune has reported that a roadway underpass is finally completed after over eight years of construction. On Twitter, the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments celebrated the milestone:

Back in 2015, the Fairway Drive Grade Separation Project began work to “create a new underpass that would run underneath a four-track railroad bridge for both freight trains and Metrolink trains.” In its efforts to address safety at the intersection of Fairway and Walnut Drives, the project also sought to reduce the amount of time cars spent waiting for passing trains at crossings. With less cars waiting, “the new railway looks to increase the amount of trains crossing from 49 in a day to 91 by 2025.” Additionally, there is less noise pollution as train horns and gate alarms are not an issue.

Opening Tuesday, officials expect more than 26,000 vehicles passing through Rowland Heights daily.
