TriMet’s Better Red project extends the MAX Red Line to serve 10 more stations.

A segment of Portland’s MAX Red Line service will be shut down this weekend for TriMet’s Better Red project.

Crews will be placing girders for a new light rail bridge at Gateway Green Park, which is located about a quarter mile north of the Gateway Transit Center. The bridge will span the existing MAX Red Line tracks near the transit center. To get the work in, MAX Red Line service from the transit center to the Portland International Airport will go dark during service hours on Saturday and Sunday. A second track is being added to sections of the Red Line near Gateway/N.E. 99th Avenue Transit Center and the Portland International Airport.

The Better Red project extends the MAX Red Line to serve 10 more stations and improves schedule reliability for the entire MAX system. The project brings nearly $100 million in federal funds and began back in the fall of 2021. Work at the Portland International Airport started in 2022, and the new service should be ready for passengers in the fall of 2024.
