Elsie and Phyllis, two huge tunnel boring machines named after distinguished ladies in British Columbia history, are set to work on the metropolitan Vancouver Broadway Subway Project. Elsie has already started tunneling, and Phyllis is expected to begin in early 2023.

These tunnel boring machines will move independently, and will require about a year to complete the work.

The project will add 3.5 miles to the SkyTrain Millennium Line, from the VCC-Clark Station to Broadway, then Arbutus. Total funding for the project, about US$2.3 billion, will be shared by the government of British Columbia, the government of Canada, and the city of Vancouver.

B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming said, “This is an exciting milestone for a critical infrastructure project that will transform the way people travel and live in and around the Broadway corridor. The Broadway Subway will provide affordable and efficient transit connections throughout the Lower Mainland, and it’s also going to create new opportunities for affordable housing, community amenities, and commercial services along the route.”
