MBTA Announce Green and Orange Line Maintenance in December
Written by Jennifer McLawhorn, Managing Editor
BOSTON - The MBTA will make service changes for December to allow for signal modernization on its Orange Line and replacement of overhead wire troughs on its Green Line.
Orange Line
In December, the MBTA will upgrade signals and complete other modernization work on the Orange Line. This will “significantly increase operational efficiency,” according to the release. During this time, crews will perform station cleaning, pump room work, plumbing repairs, and replace signs. From December 5-6, service will be suspended from Back Bay and Forest Hills to allow for this work. Detailed information regarding alternate routes for MBTA customers can be found at the link here.
Green Line
The MBTA will also replace the wooden overhead catenary trough in its Green Line tunnel. This is original construction from the 1890s and will be replaced with a “modern, more durable metal trough” to house the overhead wires. From December 8-22, service will be suspended between North Station and Babcock Street on the B Branch, Kenmore on the C and D Branches, and Heath Street on the E Branch. During this time, crews will also use the closure to complete other work, such as signal modernizations, tunnel inspections, and the Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) installation. This system uses both vehicle and wayside equipment to avoid collisions and provide stop signal overrun protection, says MBTA.
