BNSF plans to invest an estimated $306 million on maintenance and rail capacity improvements in California, Minnesota and North Dakota in 2012.

In California, an estimated $120 million will be spent to install an automated gate system at its Hobart Intermodal Facility to increase the velocity of container/trailer processing. BNSF will also continue its track maintenance program in California, which will include 786 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work, the replacement of 40 miles of rail and about 377,000 crossties, as well as signal upgrades for positive train control.

In Minnesota, an estimated $100 million will be spent on upgrading rail sidings to increase speeds, as well as signal upgrades for PTC. The railroad’s Minnesota maintenance program includes 1,817 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work and the replacement of 42 miles of rail and about 325,000 crossties.

In North Dakota, an estimated $86 million will be spent on raising the track at Devils Lake that is threatened by rising water. This project is being funded by BNSF, Amtrak and the state of North Dakota. BNSF will continue its track maintenance program in North Dakota, which will include 1,232 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work, the replacement of 67 miles of rail and about 122,000 crossties, as well as significant signal upgrades for PTC.
