Caltrain construction, maintenance update July 30 to Aug. 5

Written by jrood

Friday, July 30 to Monday, Aug. 2, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each day, crews will relocate utilities and continue construction on a shoofly at the Santa Clara, Calif., station. The shoofly is a temporary track for trains to use during the renovation of the station.

Beginning Aug. 9,
northbound passengers will board from a temporary platform. Southbound
passengers will begin using the temporary platform Aug. 16. Until Aug. 16, all
passengers will continue to wait for trains on the existing station platform. The
temporary platform will be in use for approximately six months. Scheduled train
stops at the station will not be affected by the construction. Tickets can
still be purchased at the existing ticket vending machines.

The 18-month project will
add a new wider, longer center-boarding platform and extend the southern
platform 150 feet. A new pedestrian underpass will connect the two platforms.
This will allow two trains to pass through the station at the same time and improve
safety for pedestrians at the station.

Starting Friday, July 30,
Caltrain maintenance crews began to replace the rails between Bayswater Avenue
in Burlingame and the San Mateo Caltrain Station. The project includes the
tracks between the newly reconstructed crossings at Peninsula Avenue, Villa
Terrace and E. Bellevue Avenue, as well as the rail bridges in San Mateo.

Work continues on a VTA
project that will improve safety at eight grade crossings in Sunnyvale,
Mountain View and Palo Alto.

Sunday, Aug. 1 to Thursday,
Aug. 5, foundations will be installed at Rengstorff Avenue in Mountain View and
Mary and Sunnyvale avenues in Sunnyvale. The site will be graded and trenched
and modifications to the wiring in the signal houses will be done at the same
time.

Monday, Aug. 2 to Thursday,
Aug. 5, crews will weld the tracks near the San Francisco station and will
resurface the tracks between the Belmont and San Antonio stations.

Sunday, Aug. 1 to Thursday,
Aug. 5, crews will replace crossties between the San Antonio station and the
Sunnyvale station. On Aug. 1, crews resurfaced the tracks between the Lawrence
and Santa Clara stations. Also on Aug. 1, crews welded the tracks near the San
Jose Diridon station.
