Caltrain fare increase kicks in July 1

Written by jrood

Caltrain will raise its fares for the sixth time since 2005, adding 25 cents to the base fare charged to ride the Peninsula commuter rail service. The increase will be effective July 1. The Caltrain Board of Directors approved the 25-cent increase after extensive public input on resolving the rail system's current and ongoing fiscal problems. Fares paid by Caltrain customers cover approximately 44 percent of the cost of providing its service. Members of the public, including customers, frequently commented that they would be willing to pay more to ride Caltrain if the increased fares helped to resolve the immediate budget crisis. A chart showing the new fares can be found on the Caltrain website.
