Earthquake safety construction begins at BART El Cerrito Plaza Station

Written by jrood

Visioning Sessions As part of BART's system-wide Earthquake Safety Program, in July the agency will begin strengthening structures at the El Cerrito Plaza Station to withstand future earthquakes. While this work is going on, there will be times that we will need to change pedestrian access and traffic flow to the station.

BART will be constructing
temporary enclosures, demolishing concrete structures, adding steel and
concrete to foundations, wrapping columns with reinforcement and protecting
utilities and equipment. Work will start in July and
is expected to continue approximately 20 months

In addition, in order to
strengthen the columns in the station, BART will need to remove limited
portions of the mosaic murals near the foot of the stairways. The agency plan
to restore the murals after the construction is completed.

Similar work to seismically
upgrade El Cerrito del Norte Station will occur between late 2011 and mid 2013.
BART expects to begin a separate project to strengthen the elevated structures
along the Ohlone Greenway in fall 2010. Earthquake Safety Program construction
will be under way at various other locations throughout the BART system over
the next five years. The agency expects to complete this safety retrofit in
2014.
