The wall is being installed to create a barrier between drivers and the construction site when the concrete wall between I-5 and the Pike-Pine Reversible HOV lane is disassembled to accommodate for construction for the new University Link Light Rail tunnels. Crews will rebuild the existing wall prior to removing the sheet piles.
University Link (U-Link) is a 3.15-mile light rail extension that will run in twin-bored tunnels from downtown Seattle north to the University of Washington, with stations at Capitol Hill and on the University of Washington campus near Husky Stadium.
U-Link is projected to add 70,000 daily riders to the Link system, bringing total daily ridership to 286,000 by 2030. Construction of U-Link will occur over the next seven years, with passenger service beginning in 2016.
