TransLink restructuring cuts costs to improve efficiency

Written by jrood

TransLink in the Vancouver, B.C., area continues to restructure itself with an eye to cutting costs and becoming more efficient. Beginning in 2009, 96 positions have been eliminated at TransLink or its operating companies, including six executives. On April 16, CEO Ian Jarvis implemented further changes to the executive structure, assigning new responsibilities and changing reporting relationships.

"Our focus is on
improving the alignment, effectiveness and efficiency across the organization,"
says Jarvis.  "It is important to have a leadership team committed to the
key principle that we are an integrated transportation network providing a
seamless experience to the customer."

In the most recent
changes, Doug Kelsey, president of the BC Rapid Transit Company, which operates
SkyTrain and the West Coast Express and manages the Canada Line contractor,
becomes executive vice-president of TransLink. He retains his role with BCRTC
and takes on responsibility for emergency management and safety across the
TransLink Enterprise (TransLink and its operating companies). Reporting to Kelsey
are vice-presidents Fred Cummings (Engineering and Implementation), Phil
Christie (Real Estate) and Mike Madill (Enterprise Initiatives).

Dr Michael Shiffer is now
vice-president, Planning, Strategy & Technology, and his new
responsibilities include corporate sustainability and business technology. Cathy
McLay, vice-president, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer, will add Legal
Services to her portfolio. Sandra Hentzen continues as vice-president for Human
Resources for the TransLink Enterprise. Bob Paddon, vice-president, Corporate
and Public Affairs, continues with his responsibilities for Communications and
Marketing. Denis Clements continues as president and CEO of the Coast Mountain
Bus Company.

"Last year, we secured C$130
million in additional funding to allow us to avoid significant reductions in
transit service and eliminate our structural deficit," Jarvis continued. "We
are committed to providing the best transportation system possible with the
money we have while working towards securing future funding so that we can
support the region’s economic, environmental and social sustainability."

TransLink plans, finances
and operates the transit system and funds the major roads network in
Metropolitan Vancouver, and promotes environmentally-friendly commuting options
through TravelSmart.
