Elecnor, in a joint venture with Cobra, has been short-listed for the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (PCEP), a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program in California. The project worth nearly $1.23 billion and scheduled to be implemented by 2019.

The PCEP consists of the installation of new electrical infrastructure and the replacement of existing diesel-hauled trains with Electrical Multiple Unit trains for passenger services between the Fourth and King Street Station in San Francisco and the Tamien Station in San José. This new system will be prepared for future use as high-speed rail infrastructure.

The Caltrain Modernization Program aims to provide a response to increased ridership and ridership demand over the past decade. It will upgrade the performance of the rail service, with a more efficient, faster and reliable service. The project will improve system performance with the installation of electric trains. It will lower costs (mainly fuel), while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and noise, thereby minimizing environmental impact and improving air quality.
