LIRR union coalition set to strike

United Transportation Union Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (UTU-SMART) Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) General Chairperson Anthony Simon on July 15 issued a statement on the labor situation at New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) LIRR.

"I regret to report that negotiations have collapsed with MTA and all eight unions are now proceeding with strike plans for July 20," he said. "MTA rejected the counter offer we presented last Thursday (July 10). It presented no counter proposal. It continues to insist that the unions agree to a contract worth less than the value of the compromise recommendations of two Presidential Emergency Boards (244 and 245)."

The strike will begin at 12:01 a.m. July 20; no further negotiations are scheduled at this time. The strike will be limited to LIRR and will not affect Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, Metro-North Railroad or Port Authority Trans-Hudson rail operations.
