Hampton Roads Transit in Virginia will mark the first birthday of The Tide light rail in Norfolk on Friday, August 17, with a celebration at the MacArthur Square station.

One year ago this Sunday, The Tide opened its doors. The historic occasion marked the start of a new era in public transportation in Hampton Roads. Twelve months and 1.6 million trips later, The Tide continues to exceed ridership and safety expectations.

Initial projections for the first year of service put ridership at about 2,900 average weekday boardings. Today, The Tide records nearly double that, with about 5,040 average weekday boardings. HRT is on track to carry its two millionth customer in November.

It is important to note that HRT has had zero train-induced collisions to date.

“What an accomplishment,” said HRT President William Harrell. “It’s been a wonderful year. Hampton Roads Transit is proud to have surpassed the expectations in terms of both ridership and safety.”
