The new facility will allow WMATA to conduct testing and to commission new and rehabilitated rail vehicles. The project includes design and construction of an approximately 3,000-meter (1.9-mile) test track with traction power, automatic train control and a 15-meter (.009-mile) long mock platform.
It also includes a commissioning facility, providing space for work on up to eight cars at one time and will include an overhead crane, traction power and embedded and pedestal rail. A second floor space will house offices and a conference room. Skanska will also construct a 320-space parking garage.
The facility is being constructed to be able to receive LEED Silver Certification. The project will start in July and is expected to be completed in March 2014.
