SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Commerce Commission has approved upgrades for the installation of new automatic warning gates and highway grade approach improvements at rail crossings in Franklin and Marion Counties.
According to the release from the ICC, the crossings are located at Pump Station Road, River Road, Main Street, and W 4th Street over Union Pacific‘s tracks. The estimated cost of the design and installation of the signals is $2 million with the ICC’s recommendation that the Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) is used to cover 95% of that cost. The remaining 5% and the future maintenance costs are left to Union Pacific.
For the approach curb design and construction, the estimated cost is $130,000, all of which will be covered by the GCPF. The future maintenance costs fall under the responsibility of the Village of Kinmundy and the Six Mile Township Road District.
ICC Commissioner Michael T. Carrigan said, “Enhancing the safety of Illinois’ rail crossings is vital for everyone who lives, works, and travels along train tracks. . . Infrastructure improvements like the ones in Kinmundy and Royalton will help upgrade essential warning systems, reducing the risk of collisions and fostering safer travel for everyone.”
