Caltrain’s Tamien Station Service Suspended for Guadalupe Bridge Replacement Project

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Caltrain will suspend Tamien Station electric train service to allow for construction on the Guadalupe Bridge Replacement Project.

Beginning June 16, 2025, service to and from the Tamien Station will be suspended for eight months. Riders can utilize the free VTA-operated buses between Tamien and San Jose Diridon, and South County Service will continue to operate four trains going northbound in the morning and southbound in the evening during the week.

The Guadalupe Bridge runs over the Guadalupe River in San Jose north of Tamien Station. It includes two tracks going both northbound and southbound. In 1935, the northbound track, a wooden trestle bridge, was constructed. In 1990, crews constructed a concrete bridge going southbound. Caltrain states each “requires different levels of construction.”

Due to the location of the bridges, they are at risk of riverbank failures during severe weather, which have previously occurred. Previously, the northbound Woden bridge was damaged by wildfires. To protect the bridges, the project “will conduct channel work, including erosion prevention, and complete the necessary enhancements to the rail bridges to maintain safe and reliable operations for all users.” Crews will complete vegetation work, concrete work, bridge installation, track removal/replacement, drilling/pile work, utility relocation, grading, and removal of bridge/segments.

The northbound wooden bridge will be replaced with a concrete bridge “to meet the current railroad structural design standards and seismic criteria.” It will measure 265 feet long. The southbound concrete bridge does not require a full replacement. Instead, crews will extend the southern end of the structure due to riverbank erosion and the speed of the river. Once completed, it will measure 250 feet.

Union Pacific, Amtrak, and Altamont Commuter Express (ACE) and Capital Corridor utilize the bridges.
