BOSTON - The MBTA awarded a contract to Skanska to deliver the North Station Draw One Bridge Replacement and Associated Track & Signal Upgrades project.
The project will modernize the rail corridor and strengthen connectivity in the area, which sees more than 11 million riders annually. RT&S reported back in March that there was a signing of a Project Labor Agreement (PLA), subsequently advancing the project. Throughout the project, crews will work to replace the bascule bridges, which date back to the 1930s, with vertical lift spans and expand the number of tracks from four to six. The addition of two extra tracks will help to alleviate congestion.
As well, crews will construct a new Tower A control facility, add a new Platform F at North Station, and make upgrades to approach trestles. Crews will also make upgrades to track, signal, and Positive Train Control (PTC). According to Skanska, crews will work to implement Alternative Technical Concepts to reduce in-water work, simplify construction safety, and improve safety while commuter and Amtrak service remain operational during this time. Work will begin May 2026, and it is expected to be completed in fall 2032.
“We are proud to partner with the MBTA on this transformative infrastructure investment that will enhance reliability, and support the region’s growing transit needs,” said Paul Pedini, senior vice president of Skanska USA Civil. “By leveraging innovative design and construction solutions, our team will deliver a future-ready rail network while maintaining uninterrupted service for the passengers who rely on it every day.”
“The replacement of the Draw One bridges is one of the most significant infrastructure investments in the MBTA Commuter Rail system,” said Ricky Carey, design manager of VHB. “Once complete, these new structures will deliver lasting benefits to one of the region’s busiest transportation corridors.”
