CHICAGO –– CSX recently completed a major milestone, known as CREATE P3, in Chicago’s rail infrastructure update known as CREATE (Chicago Regional Environmental and Transportation Efficiency) program by placing the final girder on the 75th Street rail flyover project.

Now, associated track work can begin. Completion of this project is a key event in “improving the flow of freight and passenger trains through one of the country’s busiest rail hubs,” according to a CSX press release.

CSX goes on to say that “As the lead railroad on the P3 project, CSX managed both design and construction, guiding the development from a concept on paper to a fully realized structure. The flyover is designed to address a long-standing bottleneck, where 30 SouthWest Service Metra trains and 35 freight trains currently intersect daily on the Western Avenue Corridor. Once complete, the flyover will separate freight and passenger traffic, reducing congestion and delays at a critical intersection on the network.”

Brett Guarino, CSX Project Manager II, Design and Construction (and also an RT&S 2025 Women In Rail Engineering Honoree, https://www.rtands.com/news/power-behind-the-rails-rts-2025-women-in-rail-engineering/) said “This project is going be be a game-changer. Once the bridge is complete, it will significantly improve the movement of trains through this area.”

The video below shows the girder placement event, which was also a celebration of, according to CSX, “the collaboration, dedication, and hard work of everyone involved, from engineers and project managers to the boots-on-the-ground crews behind this milestone.” The video also features Brett Guarino!
