ATLANTA –– This week, the Association of American Railroads published material associated with it's petition for an integrated track inspection regime that would mix Automated Track Geometry Measurement Systems (ATGMS) with visual track inspection.

Yesterday, Railway Track & Structures posted a detailed story about the AAR petition, and you can read that story here.

As a follow-up to this petition, Norfolk Southern released extensive comments in support of the AAR’s request and we have made those comments available in this story. According to the railroad, Norfolk Southern “performs automated track inspection primarily through equipment mounted on locomotives. However, we have capabilities with our railbound geometry cars as well as a variety of Hi-Rail vehicles to augment our locomotive-based approach. We do not currently utilize boxcars.

Mabby Amouie, AVP of Enterprise Data and Analytics at Norfolk Southern, said “On top of these safety advantages, the work is done while our locomotives are pulling freight across the country, so we’re gaining these safety and efficiency benefits while delivering for our customers.”
