The San Diego Association of Governments awarded Mid-Coast Contractors a $921.8 million construction manager/general contractor contract to build the Mid-Coast Trolley, construction and development firm Skanska announced today.

Mid-Coast Contractors is a joint venture of Skanska, Stacy and Witbeck and Herzog, the firm says, adding that Skanska USA Civil is set to include its portion of the contract—$307.3 million—in its Quarter 3 2016 order bookings. Stacy and Witbeck will act as the joint venture lead, with HDR, Kimley Horn and WSP | Parsons Brinkerhoff serving as the project’s designers.

As reported Sept. 15 by RT&S, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration is contributing $1.04 billion to the Mid-Coast Trolley’s construction through its Capital Investment Grant Program. The total project cost is estimated at $2.17 billion.

The trolley project aims to extend the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s Blue Line Trolley service from the Old Town Transit Center to the University City community, bringing service to major commuter destinations including a medical center. The project will be an 11-mile-long extension to San Diego’s current trolley system, connecting commuters to other trolley lines in East County, Mission Valley and South County, officials say.

The extension is also expected to improve direct public access to other regional attractions by offering a no-transfer, one-seat ride from south of Downtown San Diego to University City.

Representatives say the project’s construction is underway, and the extension is expected to begin service in 2021.
