Norfolk Southern Completed $1B in Infrastructure Upgrades in 2024

ATLANTA - Norfolk Southern announced that it has completed $1 billion worth of infrastructure improvements throughout 2024.

According to the release, the Class I completed projects throughout its 22-state network that were “designed to ensure the company can continue to safely deliver reliable and resilient service to customers and communities.”

For safety infrastructure, crews constructed 5 digital train inspection portals, installed 313 grade crossing protection warning systems, added 130 hot box/bearing detectors, installed 17 acoustic bearing detectors and 29 hot wheel detectors, and completed 140 public improvement projects.

For track, bridges, and structures, crews replaced 558 track miles of rail, 30,480 bridge ties, and 43 bridges. They also installed 2.1 million cross ties, 553 panel turnouts, and 104 culverts. 4,202 miles of track was surfaced, 78 bridges were rehabilitated.

For communications and signals, crews worked to complete 23 signal cut-ins and 869 CTC to ITCMS cut-ins. 180 switch machines and 3 classification yard speed controllers were replaced, and 3 movable bridge PLC systems received upgrades.
