BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Norfolk Southern and CSX replaced infrastructure components at the 14th Street Junction in Birmingham, Alabama.

Replaced components include turnouts, signals, and track panels, all within 48 hours, according to Norfolk Southern. These replacements “transformed” the corridor allowing for increased train speeds and reduced traffic congestion. Even though the work was completed within 48 hours, the project was in discussion for more than 10 years due to the “complexity, coordination, and alignment” necessary. The project was completed in 5 phases, and crews installed 13 signals, 17 switches, and more than 300 feet of track panels. Additionally, 140 NS and CSX railroaders retired 6 movable-point frogs (MPFs) and replaced them with standard turnouts.

Norfolk Southern AVP Communications & Signals – Engineering Jared Hopewell said, “It took strong partnership and clear coordination to deliver a solution that benefits the region and both railroads. This project strengthens our network, improves performance, and creates lasting value for the communities and customers we serve.”
