ATTALLA, Ala. - Norfolk Southern gave a look into the R3 Dual Rail Gang in Alabama.

This gang is built for large-scale mainline renewal, says Norfolk Southern. The R3 Dual Rail Gang is replacing both rails at the same time. Their work is completed within one coordinated work window to reduce the amount of service downtime. Because of the nature of the work, the amount of work required, and the work window, NS says this is a “turnkey, high production capability with specialized equipment that travels with the team across NS’ 22-state network and is designed to deliver concentrated impact where it matters most.” As of reporting, the rail gang is working in Attalla, Alabama.

The R3 Dual Rail Gang is made up of NS Engineering railroaders, including supervisors, machine operators, laborers, mechanics, foreman, and support partners. Most of the members of this rail gang bring with them 15 to 20 years or more of experience. Their coordination with the Network Operations Center (NOC) is equally important as they must work collaboratively to complete the job safely.

NS says its annual rail program focuses on around 500 track miles of rail replacement with six capital production rail gangs. More than 85 railroaders work across multiple specialties in dual rail operations. Since 2023, NS has replaced 310 miles of dual rail with a typical goal of 1.5 track miles of dual rail daily. This work is necessary to support intended speeds, extend the life of the infrastructure, and strengthen the network as a whole.
