PHILADELPHIA – Herzog Contracting Corporation and Dana B. Kenyon Company (DBK) have begun preconstruction on Amtrak’s Penn Coach Yard Heavy Maintenance Facility.

In March, RT&S reported that Herzog Contracting Corporation was awarded a contract to design and construct a new Heavy Maintenance Facility in Philadelphia. This contract is for the first of six major maintenance facilities that will help to “modernize maintenance practices and ensure a successful transition from an aging fleet to modern, state-of-the-art trains.” The facility is located near Amtrak’s 30th Street Train Station in Philadelphia. This new facility will service Amtrak’s AcelaAiro, and Northeast Regional Trains that operate on the NEC.

The release states DBK will construct the heavy maintenance facility and additional support buildings. Preconstruction to assist with design began earlier this year, and on-site construction is slated to begin in October 2024. Amtrak’s Penn Coach Yard will “operate around ongoing Amtrak and SEPTA yard operations.” The facility will allow for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of “train sets of various sizes.”

Amtrak’s Executive Vice President of Capital Delivery, Laura Mason, said, “We look forward to breaking ground in 2024 on this critical infrastructure investment along the NEC, America’s busiest passenger corridor. This new facility will speed up train maintenance and reduce turnaround times, providing Amtrak customers with more reliable and frequent service.”

Herzog’s Executive Vice President, Scott Norman, said, “Herzog is honored to be Amtrak’s design-build partner on such an important national rail project. We are excited to begin working on this project to deliver critical maintenance facility infrastructure upgrades in Philadelphia that will support improved rail service in the Northeast Corridor.”
