NEW YORK CITY - American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE) New York Metro Section Project of the Year Awards recognizes the Circulation Improvement at Grand Central-42nd Street Station project with an Honor Award.

According to the release from STV, it will be honored along with project owner MTA Construction & Development and general contractor and client Skanska. STV served as engineer-of-record and led multidisciplinary structural, tunneling, geotechnical and systems engineering for the project. The project was delivered under “live subway operations and within an exceptionally dense underground environment.” Because of this, the project necessitated “precise coordination” around active lines and historic structures.

The project took place under East 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue where crews added a new pedestrian tunnel. This tunnel connects the No. 7 subway line to the mezzanine at Grand Central Terminal and platforms at Lexington Avenue Line. The structure reduces congestion that is “caused by a single constrained exit on the station’s east side,” thus improving circulation of pedestrians and safety.

“This recognition is a tremendous honor for our entire team and our partners at MTA Construction & Development and Skanska,” said Hamidreza Rezaei, vice president and engineering director at STV. “Delivering this project beneath one of the busiest transit stations in the world required innovation, precision and collaboration at every step. The new tunnel not only resolves critical circulation challenges, but also creates a safer, more intuitive experience for the millions of commuters and visitors who rely on Grand Central every year.”
