WMATA seeks master developer for Huntington Station

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is seeking a master developer for joint development at the system’s Huntington WMATA Station.

The station is located along the Yellow Line in southern Fairfax County, placed less than 15 minutes from the future site of Amazon’s headquarters at National Landing. The station also links to the upcoming Richmond Highway Bus Rapid Transit system, WMATA said.

“As a national leader in transit-oriented development, WMATA is transforming neighborhoods by creating mixed-use, walkable communities built around transit services,” the authority said in a statement.

The station area encompasses a total of 12 acres available for mixed-use development, with five acres on the north side and seven acres on the south side of the station.

“Joint development is part of [WMATA] strategy for increasing transit ridership,” said Nina Albert, WMATA’s vice president of Real Estate and Parking. “It is also a win for the community because it is an opportunity to improve the station and better connect it to the surrounding neighborhood, as well as increase housing, retail and public space opportunities.”

The Master Developer will be tasked with managing all pre-development work, such as proposing a site plan to take through the Comprehensive Plan amendment process, infrastructure development and disposition of joint development pad sites to vertical developers, WMATA stated.

A pre-proposal conference will be held May 10 at 2:30 p.m. EST at WMATA’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. Proposals are due June 7.
