LOS ANGELES – RailWorks Corp. shares its sincere appreciation for the heroism of three employees’ actions that saved a life on L.K. Comstock’s LAX ConRAC – Arbor Vitae Street Grade Crossing Improvements project in Los Angeles.

On Nov. 18, 2023, the crew completed installation of the concrete base mounting pedestals for the new crossing arms on Arbor Vitae Avenue and were assigned to start cleaning up the tools and materials. At approximately 12:52 PM an employee collapsed on the guideway from a sudden cardiac arrest. L.K. Comstock General Foreman Kevin Bibayoff was a short distance away and noticed his coworker lying on the ground. When he approached, he found his co-worker unresponsive.

Kevin’s First Aid CPR training kicked in and he immediately called for help and asked for someone to call 911. L.K. Comstock Warehouse Manager Andrew Sisk was in the vicinity and made the call to 911. While on the phone with the 911 operator, the team was instructed to perform CPR on their coworker. Bibayoff, Sisk and Apprentice Daniel Zamudio took turns performing chest compressions and rescue breathing. An AED was also performed by another worker on site from the Department of Water and Power.

The three L.K. Comstock personnel continued performing CPR until medics arrived and took over the rescue. The medics stabilized and transported the patient to the hospital where doctors concluded that the quick response by the L.K. Comstock team likely saved the life of the patient. L.K. Comstock supervisory staff visited the patient in the hospital over the next few days until the patient was discharged and sent home for recovery.

Kevin Bibayoff, Andrew Sisk and their coworker who had the medical emergency have been employees of L.K. Comstock for more than five years. “The heroic efforts of Kevin, Andrew and Daniel saved the life of a coworker and provided a testament to the rigorous training, skill, and leadership exhibited by our employees,” said RailWorks CEO Kevin Riddett. “Thank you again for your heroism and putting your safety training into action.”

The heroic act was also recognized by PCL, the prime contractor of the LAC ConRAC project, along with the customer, the Los Angeles World of Airports (LAWA). PCL held an event on Dec. 20, 2023, honoring Kevin, Andrew and Daniel for their life-saving actions and presented them with a personalized letter recognizing and thanking them for their heroic actions. The event included executive representation from PCL and LAWA.
