The general chairman of SMART United Transportation Union local 60, Jerome Johnson, alleges that NJ Transit is not living up to its promises around maintaining coronavirus cleanliness, according to a report in nj.com prepared by NJ Advance Media. Johnson had served on the NJ Transit coronavirus task force, but has quit the task force in protest.

Johnson said “We need a sense of safety. This isn’t just about our members, but about the citizens of the state that ride NJ Transit.”

His resignation from the task force was provided in the form of a letter to NJ Transit in which he said “I provided NJ Transit with pictures and train numbers, especially on weekends, train cleanings are just not being done properly. Protocols are not being followed. Equipment being clean every 24 hours is false. I have pictures, videos and complaints.”

Nancy Snyder, an NJ Transit spokesperson, says that “the health and safety of our nearly 12,000 employees remain our highest priority. We continue to source and procure this equipment on a daily basis during this time of nationwide shortages. Employee workplaces and common areas are vigorously cleaned and disinfected, which is part of our established response protocols.”
