DALLAS - Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) will remove the center crosswalk at seven LRT station platforms in order to improve safety.
According to the release, DART crews are currently working to remove the center crosswalks and instead opt to install fencing between the tracks along the Green, Blue, and Red lines. This work will take place at LRT stations in Carrollton, Dallas, Farmers Branch, Garland, and Rowlett. DART Transform is a program that focuses on “vehicles, stations and passenger facilities, resiliency, a unified signaling system and operating facilities.”
As part of DART Transform, DART says, once completed, this work will increase safety for pedestrians and improve visibility for train operators. There are no anticipated service interruptions for riders as crews work. Below are the list of impacted stations and construction dates.
- Buckner Station in Dallas: March 3rd to 7th
- Downtown Rowlett Station in Rowlett: March 10th to 14th
- Downtown Garland Station in Garland: March 17th to 21st
- Lake June Station: March 21st to 31st
- Hatcher Station: March 31st to April 7th
- Farmers Branch Station in Farmers Branch: April 7th to 14th
- Trinity Mills Station in Carrollton: April 14th to 18th
Regarding DART Transform, DART CEO & President Nadine Lee said, “Many of our vehicles and facilities have reached their usage capacity, so it’s time to invest in our aging system to ensure our customers have a cleaner, safer, more reliable experience when they are commuting with us. . . DART Transform aligns with our Point B vision, a road map that will move us from where we are now to where we want to be as an agency.”
In the future, DART will replace its light rail vehicles, but that work is still in the planning and development phase. However, the agency states riders can expect new LRVs in 2029. To accommodate the new LRVs, DART will raise station platforms along the Red and Blue lines to allow for level boarding from all access points.
