LOS ANGELES - LA Metro's nine-mile extension of the A Line opens September 19 at noon.

According to Metro’s The Source, the extension from Azusa to Pomona will “make the A Line a great alternative to the oft-congested 10 and 210 freeways” and “will be a fast, convenient and a very affordable way to travel between the Foothill Cities and beyond.” To celebrate the opening of the extension, the Metro is offering free rides across the system from Friday, Sept. 19 at 4:00 a.m. to Monday,Sept. 22 at 3:00 a.m.

The project was part of Metro’s 28 by 28 initiative. This sought to enhance transit infrastructure across the region prior to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As of reporting, nine projects are completed, and 19 are in-progress.

Metro’s A Line is the longest light rail line in the world at 48.5 miles long. With continued growth, it will be close to 58 miles long.

Additionally, along the extension are four new stations. These can be reached by car, transit, bike, or by walking. The four stations are Glendora Station, San Dimas Station, La Verne/Fairplex Station, and Pomona North Station. In June, RT&S reported on the completion and dedication of these four new Metro A Line Stations. Below is a gallery of the four stations, courtesy of Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority.

Pomona North Station, above, acts as a connection point to Metrolink regional rail. The Metro says the new A Line platform is “just north of Metrolink’s platform.” Information on the transfer to Metrolink’s regional rail system can be found here.
