MTA Reaches Post-Pandemic Ridership Record

LONG ISLAND – LIRR ridership sets a post-pandemic record.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced that LIRR carried 227,623 riders last Tuesday, May 30th. This is not the first time LIRR has broken the 200,000 rider mark in a single day – this is the 41st time it has happened at Grand Central Madison since opening full service after the pandemic. Before that, Metro-North carried 214,621 commuters the week prior.
In terms of Yankee games, Metro-North carried anywhere between 3,000 to 5,100 riders for each of the last six games and broke records Last Friday and Saturday with 10.7% and 10.8% of the gate, respectively.
Metro-North released last week’s ridership each weekday:
- Monday, May 22nd – 186,008
- Tuesday, May 23rd – 214,621
- Wednesday, May 24th – 208,487
- Thursday, May 25th – 201,855
- Friday, May 26th – 187,188
LIRR Interim President and Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi said, “LIRR and Metro-North ridership continues to grow as more people travel around the region to work, eat, and play. The teams at both railroads are doing an amazing job providing the safe and reliable service that our customers are looking for. . . We want to keep the momentum going and get people out of their cars and onto our trains all Summer long as they head east to the Hamptons and to the many parks and hiking trails north of Manhattan.”
