Two MTA Stations Finish Installation of Elevators

NEW YORK CITY – The MTA announces the installation of elevators with security systems at two of its stations, one in Brooklyn and one in Manhattan.

At its Manhattan Dyckman St 1 and Brooklyn 8 Av N stations, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has installed new elevators. This makes each station completely accessible and ADA compliant. Each elevator has “the latest technology to support customer safety and communications, such as emergency two-way communication system which gives riders the ability to communicate with dispatchers in the event of an emergency via standard voice communications or visually by answering on-screen questions, which improves communication for hearing impaired riders.”

As July is Disability Pride Month, the NYC Transit President Richard Davey stated his enthusiasm that “each new elevator installed in the transit system represents real progress towards a more accessible system, making it easier for customers with mobility devices, luggage, strollers, or bicycles to get around.”

The Dyckman Station ADA Project work included the construction of “an expanded mezzanine to incorporate the new elevator and the installation of an upgraded public address system.” The construction is part of a larger eight-station design from MTA Construction & Development and is funded by an FTA grant. The other stations in this eight-station design will receive updates later this year. 

Local government officials commended MTA’s efforts to be ADA compliant with State Senator Robert Jackson stating that this elevator creates “accessibility to the Bronx-bound platform and the entire station.”

In November of 2019, the 8 Av N Station Ada Project also included the installation of an elevator for northbound service. The upgrade included a “reconfiguration of sections of both platforms in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, installation of a new fire alarm system and upgraded security system.” This was included in another design build plan with six other stations “and replacements of elevators at 2 more stations.” With funding also provided from the FTA, the other six stations are slated to be completed by 2024.

By the end of this year, there are “31 accessible station projects in construction, with nine of those expected to be complete by the end of 2023,” according to the MTA. A list of those stations includes 181 Street A, Lorimer St L, Metropolitan Av G, New Dorp, Tremont Av B and D, E 149 St 6, Grand St L, 7 AV F and G, and Beach-67 St A stations.
