“Critical” Track Work to Take Place in October on MBTA Red and Mattapan Lines

BOSTON – MBTA details its critical track work that will take place over 16 days in October on the Red and Mattapan lines.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announces it will expedite critical track work this October between JFK/UMass and Ashmont Stations. The MBTA will close access between the two stations on the Red Line and between Ashmont and Mattapan Stations on its Mattapan line from October 14^th to October 29^th.

Ahead of the construction, the MBTA says it will hold 4 open houses next Month to “provide the public an opportunity to engage with the project team, learn about the details of construction work, and voice their thoughts, comments, and concerns.” The area targeted is one of the oldest in the network, and crews will “replace rail, ties, and ballast” in order to reduce future maintenance needs. The 16-day closure will allow crews “unencumbered access” to get the work done. 

Once this construction work is completed, “28 speed restrictions will be alleviated” therefore improving traffic for the Mattapan Line. In addition to the construction work, the MBTA will also work to complete station enhancements which include removing vegetation and tripping hazards, painting, power washing, making improvements to accessibility, and repairing lighting.
