As part of the contract, North End Connectors will design, build, and finance the advance tunneling project for the extension. The project will use IO’s Public-Private-Partnership model, or P3. Previously, the project underwent a procurement process to select the team that submitted a proposal “that delivers the best value for Ontarians.”
North End Connectors team is made of:
- “Applicant Leads: Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd., Ghella Canada Ltd.
- Construction: Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd., Ghella Canada Ltd.

The project includes tunneling around 6.3 kilometers for an estimated 8 kilometer extension. Additionally, it includes a tunneled route running North along Yonge Street from Finch Station and curve east along Bay Thorn Drive. Crews will design and construct the “launch and extraction shafts, twin tunnels, headwalls for emergency exit buildings and stations, and support of excavation for emergency exit buildings.” Other project work includes the procurement and installation of TBMs, or tunnel boring machines, and precast concrete tunnel liners.
