TORONTO - The Ontario government has broken ground on its second Ontario Line tunnel near the future Gerrard Station.
According to the Ontario government, tunnel boring machines will dig three kilometers north underneath Pape Avenue from south Riverdale to the Don Valley. The release says the launch shaft will serve as the tunnel portal where trains move to the underground tunnels. The future Gerrard Station will be located south of said launch shaft and will “put nearly 12,000 people within walking distance of the Ontario Line.” The Ontario Line will have 15 stations that go from Exhibition Place and connect to Line 5 Eglinton at Don Mills Road.
Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria said, “The Ontario Line will introduce all-new rapid transit to the Gerrard and Carlaw community and surrounding neighborhoods, part of our nearly $70 billion investment to deliver the largest transit expansion in North America. . . In the face of U.S. tariffs and economic uncertainty, we are protecting Ontario’s economy by building the next generation of subway service that will create thousands of good-paying jobs and fuel long-term economic growth.”
The Honorable Julie Dabrusin, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change and Member of Parliament for Toronto – Danforth said, “The federal government is making historic investments to expand public transit infrastructure in communities across Canada. . . With construction continuing on the Ontario Line, we are a step closer to delivering affordable public transit to thousands and building a more connected Toronto.”
